Hand Side Stitching:
Hand Side Stitching can only performed by skilled craftsmen. It takes a long time to learn this skill and is crucial to any high quality mattress. Hand side stitching is not the same as side stitching as this can be performed by a machine, only gives the look and has completely no effect This time honoured skill has a huge effect on the mattress as each line is stitched using twine attaching the edge of the mattress to the spring. The effects of this are stronger edges therefore giving more support and enabling the mattress to perform better and to give longevity.
Burgess uses many different materials in the fillings of their different mattresses. All have positive qualities and are of the highest quality available.

The Benefits of Natural Fibres
The human skin is not only a closed surface, but a breathing layer of our body. Through pores and our body hair the temperature of our body is kept under control. From the surface of our skin the humidity will have to evaporate into the air around us. If this process is blocked (by wearing a plastic coat, rubber boots, or sleeping on synthetic foam) we feel very uncomfortable. Natural fibres go well with our skin. (cotton shirt, shoes from real leather, wool ticking). The reason is that natural materials always have been part of the air-conditioning of a living thing. They are designed to transport the humidity.

Unlike petroleum-based products, the raw materials which Burgess uses are not in limited supply; they are constantly being replenished by nature and so the ecological balance is maintained. Animal hair and coco fibres are mostly disposable by-products of a different process. Burgess reuses these materials and gives them a new purpose in life.

Horsehair
Horse hair is very resilient by nature and has fantastic ventilating properties. The hollow fibre transports humidity away from the body and ensures a comfortable micro-climate.

Horse Hair Mattress Filling
Horse-Tail-Hair is very special in this respect. This is the strongest, longest and most coarse fibre. It has a very open core. Through the capillary action of the core and the scales on the surface it creates an excellent media to transport humidity.
Horsehair is has been used by the top-quality bedding manufacturers and upholsterers for centuries to provide their products with greater durability and comfort. Burgess use hair in both divans and mattresses with traditional ‘hand-made’ production techniques.

Coir Fibre Mattress FillingCoir Fibre
Coir fibre is100% natural and originates in the outer husk of coconuts
– it comes from part of the seedpod of the coconut palm.
Coir fiber is heat and moisture resistant, has good ventilation, is moth proof and flame retardant, and is an excellent insulator.

Wool Mattress FillingWool
Virgin wool curls naturally. Using it in mattresses results in stylish, comfortable volume. Wool can absorb twice as much moisture as cotton, and 30 times as much as polyester! Wool has naturally high flame resistance because of its low flammability (it can manage a burning cigarette) and flame-suppressant properties, stopping fire from spreading by choking it. Products made from pure new wool do not cause allergies. Virgin wool absorbs moisture from the surroundings, stopping fungal growth and so breaking the food chain that house mite depends on

Cotton Mattress FillingCotton
Almost pure cellulose, cotton is the world's most widely used natural fibre. The main reasons for this are it's softness and breathability. Cotton absorbs moisture readily which makes cotton comfortable in hot weather.

Cashmere Mattress FillingCashmere
Cashmere is the wool or fur of the Kashmir goat. Kashmir goats are primarily raised in Mongolia.. The fibres are highly adaptable and are easily transformed into fine or thick yarns, and light to heavyweight fabrics. The high moisture content allows insulation properties to change with the relative humidity in the air.

Silk Mattress Filling Silk
For centuries, silk has had a reputation as a luxurious and sensuous fabric that is associated with wealth and success. Silk is one of the oldest fibres known to man. The Chinese have used it since the 27th century BC. Silk is mentioned by Aristotle and became a valuable commodity both in Greece and Rome. In the Roman Empire, silk was literally worth its weight in gold. The unique production process adds to the mystery and exclusiveness of the fabric. It takes 5500 silkworms to produce one kilogram of raw silk.

Natural Latex
This material feels extremely soft and supportive. It helps to relieve pressure points. It is antimicrobial, and resists mould and dust mites. Natural latex is a natural renewable material. 100% pure natural latex is inherently hypo-allergenic, anti-microbial and dust-mite-resistant, making it perfect for allergy sufferers or anyone simply wanting to breathe fresh, clean air while they sleep. In addition, natural latex is breathable, keeping you warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Latex comes from the hevea brasiliensis, or the rubber tree, it is the most naturally durable cushioning material available. So while it might cost a little more initially, latex will provide you with the perfect balance of comfort and support for years to come.

Natural Hessian
High density Hessian is used as a spring insulator. It provides the foundation for the comfort layer of fillings.
